South Carolina is a great place to visit, I didn’t realize that the ‘low lands’ were just that. looooowwwww…… The SASS in 32/16 was spot on if not a little short. I definitely have to start investing in (or at least remembering that I need them when at the bike shop next) a variety of cogs and chain rings. I just don’t know if I’m smart enough to get it right depending on the terrain.
FRIDAY
We made to this park for some riding. Even the flats had had rolling down hills. The trails were fun to ride though because they zigged and zagged thorough most of the park which consisted of alot of pines, some cool bridges with table tops and a couple of creek crossings. Not alot of bikes in the area so I’m sure that Georgians were holding out on us.
After the ride we headed back to HHI and went here for some sea food. I got a grilled sampler and Aurora put together a combo with Gator on it. Yeah, it’s not for me. The place was tiny and I guess super busy because it was portrayed on some cooking show recently. You get to this shack, wait outside behind a line of 12 people, get invited inside to wait in line to order and once you’ve ordered your asked to wait outside until a table is ready for you followed shortly by your food. The place sat prolly 25-30 people max. It was different.
SATURDAY
Up and out before 8 AM. It was a breezy morning but the ocean held a treat in the form of a school of dolphins hanging out 30-50 feet off of the coast directly in-front of our hotel. It was pretty cool to see. I wonder if there are anythings around here like that that I take for granted. It was cool to sit and watch them.
Spend the afternoon on the beach soaking up the surf checking on my crabs
There he is
Later that night it was a crab leg smorgasbord!!! Not the little guy but full rock crab legs as far as the eye could see…………Mmmmm butter. But it was bring your own drinky, so I knew what I had to do. I just needed to find a good ol’ Wisconsin grocer and have at with their selection. I was in luck. I followed the Volvo with the rag down all the way to the pig.
Checked out the selection and came up empty handed on the peebers. Scanned the Bud-Lite at $10.60 a twelver and quickly spoted and dusted off a kool twelver of the “champagne of beers”. Apparently being the cheap stuff seeing how it was only $6.40 fer 12. With that the cooler was locked and loaded for 1!
The party went okay. Made some friends. Talked about bicycles, and was even pegged as a fouth for some 24 hour race in NC or Jersey. To be determined I guess. The night ended with a little room racing ala 212!
Photo creds go to Maria.
SUNDAY
Bust a move day and roll out. 1030 miles to our door step and 6 state lines to cross. I far from consider myself an extended distance driver so the 16.5 hours of driving seems like an obstacle that I’ll have to build myself up to the challange. There’s only so much that you can do for that kinda time. Musical armpit farts, i-tunes, littering 1 discarded beer can in every state that you drive through, and checking the dialect of the phrase “You’all” as you gradually creep north.
I did have a chance to view the mountain range through North Carolina. It was a cool sight to see. you know that you’re on some twisty roads when they have signs posting “Danger – Curves ahead for the next 21 miles” shooting up one range and down the other. This strech here was pretty mild.
It definitely makes me want to make plans to look up some parks in the area. While at HHI I met a guy from Grand Rapids, MI who was stopping at Pisgah Nation Park on the way home. It’s on my radar now….
Short of meeting a nice Indiana Trooper all of about 2 miles into Indiana it was an uneventful drive, which is perfect for me. We pulled into the driveway after 16.5 hours and 12:30 AM Belle City time. I think the Trooper Johnson was digging my shades
